Gaza Ceasefire Announced
Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed Al Thani has announced a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, marking a significant step toward peace after 15 months of conflict. The ceasefire comes following earlier reports from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. The agreement includes the release of dozens of Israeli hostages, enabling families to reunite.
The conflict, which began on October 7, 2023, escalated after Hamas militants launched a surprise attack in southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the kidnapping of 250 individuals.
Hostage Release
As part of the first phase of the truce, 33 Israeli hostages—kidnapped during the October 7 attack—have been released and can now return to their families. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Al Thani, who emphasized Qatar’s role in brokering the agreement.
Toward Stability and Peace
President-elect Trump described the deal as an “epic agreement” and stated, “No more terrorists in Gaza,” while pledging to expand the Abraham Accords. The Biden administration also confirmed the agreement.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted that humanitarian aid can now reach Gaza’s civilians. She urged both sides to uphold the agreement, calling it a vital step toward stability and the potential for a lasting diplomatic resolution.
Celebrations Across Gaza
The ceasefire news was met with celebrations across Gaza. Palestinians honked car horns, waved flags, and shared hopes for safety and rebuilding lives. After enduring hunger, bombings, and loss, many expressed cautious optimism. “Everyone talks about going home, even if it’s destroyed,” one resident shared.
Despite the relief, the devastating toll of the conflict remains evident. Gaza’s Health Ministry reports 46,600 deaths since the start of Israel’s ground and air campaign on October 7, 2023, with over half of the victims identified as women, children, or older adults.
