The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has officially approved an alternative Filipino version of the Hail Mary prayer.

The newly sanctioned Ave Maria was endorsed during the CBCP’s recent plenary assembly as an alternative to the widely used Tagalog-based Aba Ginoong Maria.

A More Faithful Rendition

Msgr. Bernardo Pantin, CBCP Secretary General, clarified that the new translation does not replace the existing version but offers a more faithful and accurate rendering of the original Latin text.

“[It’s] more contextualized, simple and adaptable to the changing times, as well as enhances our understanding and appreciation of the significance and richness of its biblico-theological foundation,” Pantin stated.

Guided by Biblical and Liturgical Principles

In an accompanying commentary, the CBCP explained that the revisions adhere to several key principles, including biblical accuracy, simplicity, prayerfulness, adaptability to contemporary life, and the spirit of synodality to ensure unity within the Church.

“The revisions are guided by: faithfulness to the original Latin text, bible-based, simplicity, prayerfulness, adaptability to the changing times and in the Philippine context, and the spirit of synodality that all may be one,” the CBCP emphasized.

A Significant Move Amid the Jubilee Year 2025

The introduction of this alternative prayer coincides with the Catholic Church’s celebration of the Jubilee Year of 2025. The milestone year also marks the 50th anniversary of the CBCP’s pastoral letter on the Blessed Virgin Mary, Ang Mahal na Birheng Maria, which was originally issued on February 2, 1975.

The CBCP’s initiative reflects its commitment to deepening the faithful’s connection to Marian devotion while ensuring that prayer remains accessible and meaningful in contemporary Filipino life.
