Manila, Philippines — Pope Francis has appointed Monsignor Glenn Corsiga as the new bishop of the Diocese of Ipil in southern Philippines, ending a nearly two-year vacancy in the diocese. The Vatican announced the appointment at 12 p.m. Rome time (6 p.m. Manila time) on Monday, April 14.

The Diocese of Ipil, located in Zamboanga Sibugay province, had been without a bishop since August 2023, following the transfer of Archbishop Julius Tonel to the Archdiocese of Zamboanga. Since then, the diocese has been under the pastoral care of Monsignor Elizar Cielo, who served as diocesan administrator.

Monsignor Corsiga, 60, hails from Dumaguete. He pursued his philosophical studies at St. Joseph Seminary College in Sibulan, Negros Oriental, and later earned his theological degree from Divine Word Seminary in Tagaytay City. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Dumaguete on December 14, 1993.

Throughout his priestly ministry, Corsiga has served in various capacities including parish vicar, seminary spiritual director, vice chancellor, and rector. Notably, in 2011, he was named a papal chaplain by Pope Benedict XVI, conferring upon him the honorary title of “monsignor.”

More recently, he served as parish priest of St. James the Greater in Tanjay (2014–2020), episcopal vicar of the diocese’s north district (2014–2017), and currently serves as vicar general of the Diocese of Dumaguete since 2017 and parish priest of St. Augustine of Hippo in Bacong since 2020.

Corsiga’s episcopal appointment marks a new chapter for the faithful of the Diocese of Ipil, as they welcome a new shepherd after nearly two years of waiting.
