Jesuit Social Services Calls for Reform in Australia’s Youth Justice and Incarceration System

In a reflection on Jesuit Social Services’ submission to the Senate Inquiry into youth justice and incarceration, Fr. Andrew Hamilton SJ outlined key recommendations for reform. The submission emphasized the need to raise the age of criminal responsibility, improve alternative responses like diversion and restorative justice, and ensure children’s dignity is respected in the justice system. The Jesuit organization also advocated for the implementation of a National Human Rights Act and called for increased involvement of Indigenous communities in addressing systemic issues. These proposals aim to protect the rights and well-being of young people in the Australian justice system.
