EU Bishops: Ukraine’s Struggle ‘Decisive for the Fate of Europe and the World

By Kielce Gussie

Brussels, Belgium – The Presidency of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) has released a statement emphasizing the critical role of Ukraine’s struggle for peace in shaping the future of Europe and the world. The statement, issued on March 4, reaffirms the EU Bishops’ unwavering support for Ukraine and its people, who have been enduring Russia’s full-scale invasion for more than three years.

A Struggle with Global Implications

The Bishops expressed their ongoing prayers for the victims of the war, including those who have died, been wounded, or displaced. They also acknowledged the efforts of EU decision-makers in providing extensive humanitarian, political, economic, financial, and military support to Ukraine.

Beyond offering support, the Bishops underscored the far-reaching consequences of Ukraine’s battle for sovereignty. “Ukraine’s fate will not be confined within its borders; rather, it will determine the trajectory of Europe and the broader international order,” the statement read.

A Call for Unity and Justice

Recognizing the unpredictable geopolitical landscape, the Bishops urged the EU and its member states to remain steadfast in their commitment to supporting Ukraine. Marking the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion, they denounced the attack as a “blatant violation of international law” and called for justice and accountability for crimes committed against civilians.

Defining a Just and Lasting Peace

The statement outlined the Bishops’ vision for peace, stressing that any resolution must be comprehensive, just, and enduring. They insisted that negotiations should be conducted with full international backing and with Ukraine’s direct involvement. The EU Bishops “firmly reject any attempts to distort the reality of this aggression.”

Peace, they maintained, must be grounded in international law and should enable Ukrainian families to reunite and rebuild their lives in dignity, security, and freedom within their sovereign homeland. At the same time, they highlighted the need to protect the rights of all communities, including the Russian-speaking minority.

As part of Ukraine’s reconstruction, the Bishops called for Russia, as the aggressor, to contribute to the rebuilding process. They emphasized that lasting peace must be achieved through international cooperation and solidarity.

Advancing Ukraine’s EU Membership

The Bishops also encouraged the European Union to advance Ukraine’s path to membership in a “timely and fair manner.” They expressed hope that the EU would continue fulfilling its role as a global promoter of peace and stability.

As Christians prepare to enter the season of Lent on March 5, the Bishops entrusted Ukraine and Europe to Jesus through the intercession of Mary, the Queen of Peace. They urged the faithful to continue praying for a just resolution to the conflict and for the restoration of peace in the region.
